Laser beams and British werewolves

see caption
Above: Venus, photographed by the Galileo spacecraft in 1990. [More]

Picture this: A spaceship swoops in from the void, plunging toward a cloudy planet about the size of Earth. A laser beam lances out from the ship; it probes the planet's clouds, striving to reach the hidden surface below. Meanwhile, back on the craft's home world, scientists perch on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens.

Sounds like science fiction? This is real, and it's happening today.

The spacecraft is MESSENGER, and the planet is Venus. On June 5, 2007, MESSENGER will fly past Venus just 338 km above the planet's surface--and it will shoot a laser into the clouds.

MESSENGER is on a mission to Mercury, not Venus. But the spacecraft must pass by Venus for a gravity assist en route. In passing, researchers hope to learn a few things about Earth's "evil twin," an Earth-sized world with sulfuric acid clouds, a choking carbon dioxide atmosphere, and a surface hot enough to melt lead.

Of particular interest is the laser experiment, which aims to measure the location of Venus' cloud decks. "It could either fizzle or be a major result," says Ralph McNutt, MESSENGER's project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. "We've never sent a laser to Venus before. This could give us some unique information about the planet's clouds."

see captionThe name of the laser is MLA--short for Mercury Laser Altimeter. It was designed to map the rocky topography of Mercury, but MLA turns out to have some nice properties for the study of Venus. Solomon explains: "Venus' atmosphere and clouds are nearly transparent at several infra-red wavelengths." The wavelength of the laser (1064 nm) is close to one of these spectral "windows," so it may be able to penetrate deep into the atmosphere. "It's a long shot, but we may even see returns from the surface of Venus," he speculates.

Right: The Mercury Laser Altimeter, MLA. The central laser is surrounded by four receiver telescopes. [More]

In May, Wiccan "spiritual counselor" Teresa Gurnell appeared before her city council to request a permit to do spiritual counseling at her New Age shop, a service not covered by her city codes, so she apparently needed to request a conditional use permit. During the hearing, she was grilled by memebers including the city mayor, who after hearing that Gurnell was a spirit medium and a Wiccan, refused to grant her request, saying "I can't support that." Other members voted in her favor, but the mayors dissent necessitated a further hearing, which took place yesterday. This time, Gurnell was not alone. Pagans of all descriptions turned out in force and spoke in her behalf, which doesn't appear to have changed the mayor's mind, but it's a heartening thing to see all the same. What's amusing here is that the local reporter seems somewhat surprised that pagans- even ones who wear robes and pentacles- also do ordinary things like eat in restaurants.

Trip proposed to centre of Earth via Arctic hole
A U.S. scientist and a small band of believers are planning a journey to the Canadian Arctic for what they call "the greatest geological expedition in history." Are they searching for Arctic oil reserves? Documenting evidence of climate change? Not quite. They're looking for a fog-shrouded hole in the Arctic Ocean that leads -- they say -- to the centre of the Earth, where an unknown civilization is lurking inside the hollow core of the planet.

British werewolves still creating controversy
A rash of 'caveman' and 'werewolf' sightings near Stafford could have a rational explanation - after one expert claimed REAL wolves could survive on Cannock Chase. Paranormal investigators around the globe are in a frenzy after the Post revealed reports of a 'strange creature' on the beauty spot were growing.

The mind outside the body
Deepak Chopra: By now everyone is familiar with advances in brain imaging and the fascinating insights being produced in many areas of brain research. Much less known are advances in locating the mind outside the brain. Long considered paranormal and therefore easy to dismiss, the reality of many phenomena is being verified.

Solar Cross

The Solar cross is probably the oldest religious symbol in the world, appearing in Asian, American, European, and Indian religious art from the dawn of history. Composed of a equal armed cross within a circle, it represents the solar calendar- the movements of the sun, marked by the solstices. Sometimes the equinoxes are marked as well, giving an eight armed wheel. (The swastika is also a form of Solar cross.) The cross in its most simplified form (shown above) is known in Northern Europe as Odin's cross, after the Chief God of the Norse pantheon. It is often used as an emblem by Asatruar, followers of the Norse religion. The Celtic cross is a symbol of the Celtic Christian Church, borrowed from the pre-Christian Celtic Pagan emblem of the God Taranis:

Another similar symbol is the symbol of the ancient Assyrian God Shamash. The Lauburu (four heads), a traditional Basque emblem, is also a form of solar cross. The Etruscan God Ixion was often depicted crucified on a solar wheel while the Aztec solar deity Quetzalcoatl, has often been depicted crucified on an equal armed cross.

I hope everyone has a great week. Thanks to those of you who sent positive thoughts to little Savannah. At latest update, she had begun digesting food and showed every indication of improving. And on an even more positive note, my friend proudly informed me that she was actually able to hold her new little girl a few times while her nappies were changed. Please continue to remember Savannah and her parents in your thoughts and prayers.

See you in the ether !

Hi Jay! Yes, it has been a long time, hasn't it? And you have been a busy little beaver...

Yes, Yawto is definitely a gorgeous wolf, that's for sure. He's three years old, now, and I hope I actually get the chance to meet him next year; that would just be awesome...

Oh, yes, there are changes. How can there not be, right? Life is changing us every moment of every day, even though we don't always notice it. As a recent example, in the past few weeks, every aspect of my life has been changed by the renovations we're doing in our home. I've heard it said that if a marriage can survive that, it can survive almost anything, and boy, is that a true statement! But, from chaos springs order, and that's what we're focusing on now. LOL But I've also noticed that I'm becoming somewhat "obsessed" with the concept of transcending the laws of gravity, thanks to a young man on television named Chriss Angel.

Jay, this guy is freakin' amazing; he literally levitates off the ground, he's made other people levitate - and he does this all in public, with "continuous shot" cameras rolling, and no wires, pulleys, tables, or anything anywhere. If you have the Discovery Channel, watch it - last night, his show was on at midnight; I'll have to check my TV guide to see when he comes on again. But in the meantime, if you get that channel, you should watch it. The show is called MindFreak...

Anyway, I hope to see you posting more, my friend. Your blogs are always so interesting, and I really enjoy reading them...

Hi Jay.
I hope all is well with you

I was brought up 4 minutes walk from Cannock Chase. I lived there from the age of 5 to 16. I can well believe there are wolves. Stray dogs and cats were abandoned in the past to scavenge maybe they interbreed ed? Possibly an elusive tramp of some kind but warewolfs????????????I don't think so!
